Helping an ageing dog at home

Older golden retriever resting on an Apawrest orthopedic bed at home

The first signs that a dog is getting older are small: a slower rise in the morning, a pause before the stairs, a new preference for the rug over the hard floor. None of it is an emergency. All of it is worth paying attention to.

Make the floor kinder

Hard floors are tough on ageing joints, both to lie on and to get up from. A supportive bed she can actually get out of takes the strain off the moment that matters most, the first push up.

Keep the routine steady

Older dogs lean on routine. Same bed, same spot, same rhythm. The less she has to think about where to rest, the more she rests.

Watch, and ask your vet

We're owners, not vets. If her symptoms are getting worse, things like limping, stiffness that doesn't ease, or reluctance to move, the kindest first move is a call to your vet. A good bed is one piece of the picture, not a substitute for care.

If you're sizing a bed for an older dog, our size guide walks you through it.
